FAQ

Does Missing Link only have vinyl records?
No. We carry a large selection of music and video of all types, from the latest digital formats  to way obsolete (78’s and 8-Tracks, for example).
Do you stock new music, or only used?
We do stock lots of new vinyl releases, both reissues of classic and rare lp's as well as new releases, especially in the hip hop, punk, rock and indie realms. We selectively stock new CD's and DVD's; however, most of our CD stock is pre-owned.
What about local music?
Glad you asked! We have a great selection of vintage and rare local music. We also will carry virtually any current or recent local release. Bands and artists should bring their releases to us. Please!
Why would anyone still want vinyl records?

Some people feel that the warmer sound of analog vinyl, particularly when the music was recorded in analog mode, is preferable to digital music. Others like the cover art, the lyric and poster inserts, or the nostalgia of the medium. Some people enjoy hearing a bit of surface noise, while others like the physical act of playing records. Lots of adults are still working on their collections, while many younger adults and teens are just starting theirs.

Not only that,  but despite the flood of compact discs, many  titles are not available digitally and never will be.  This is true of well known artists as well as obscure ones.

Surprisingly to some, vinyl is a great archival medium. Old vinyl from the 50’s which has been well preserved sounds just like brand new, and this is true even of 78's made many decades earlier.

There are uncertainties and even some controversy as to how long CD’s and other digital storage media will preserve sound.

Vinyl, if properly stored and cared for, will last virtually forever because the information is physically pressed onto the plastic.

How can I get a turntable?
Turntables are surprisingly easy to find. All of the big-box electronics stores carry them. We often have nice used turntables for sale. And, you can find them on the internet.
My turntable works, but I need a new needle. What do I do?

Missing Link carries the two major varieties of cartridges: screw mount, and p-mount. The screw mount is distinguished by the presence of 4 screws in the top of the turntable arm shell, which hold the cartridge in the arm. The p-mount is a plug-in style that has no screws. We carry new Grado cartridges, which is a reliable and inexpensive brand. Either cartridge will fit most vintage and current turntables, except for DJ tables and exotic audiophile tables. We also stock replacement needles for Grado cartridges.

If you’re not sure what you need, bring your turntable in and we’ll fix you up. Phone first and we might be able to install for you as well.

Do you only trade or do you actually pay CA$H?
We offer more in trade than we are able to in cash, so if you want to swap your items for other items, this route is not only accepted but encouraged!  But unlike some stores, YES indeed we do offer cash.
Do you all buy Cds?
Yes. We typically pay up to $3 per disc if complete and in excellent condition, but we also pay more for more collectible discs as well. Remember that obscure titles are more up our alley than the Top 10 stuff.  As a result you'll get more for your CD's if they match up to the kind of music we typically sell.
Do you all buy ?
As long as you are not referring to bags of gently used body parts, or old tires, we will offer you cash or store credit for any music-related items that we can use in the store. We also buy video games, systems, and movies.
Do you buy video games or video game systems? How about Dvds?
Am I the only one sensing deja vu? Indeed we do friend, indeed we do. And as is the case with our record buying guidelines, we can offer you more based upon the condition and completeness of the games/systems/movies.  Unlike those chain stores we are interested in older/vintage games as well as the new ones.
How much do you pay for records, cd's , movies, games, and other stuff?
It depends on the condition, what we think we can sell it for, and whether we already have copies.  Check our buying page for more detailed info.
What kinds of music do you buy?
We buy a little bit of all genres. See our buying page for more detail.
When do you buy and how long does it take?
We buy every day, whenever we’re open, with minor exceptions. If you want to be sure, call or email first. Usually we can make you an offer within a few minutes; for larger collections you can leave them and come back.
Do you buy 33 and a third long-playing record vinyls?
Yes. (aka lp's, albums, etc.)
Do you buy the little ones?
Yes. (aka 45's or 7")
Do you buy the fragile big ole heavy ones?
Yes. (aka 78's)
Do you buy records without the covers?
Unless they are hip hop not typically. Except for the little ones and the big ole fragile heavy ones.
I live in _____ and want to sell my collection to you, will you buy it?
We cannot buy records through the mail unfortunately, so unless you live near us, have an amazing collection that we simply can’t pass up, or are able to bring the records to us (see house calls) we can provide only limited assistance.
Do you make house calls?
Yes, but we are not licensed to practice medicine. As far as music and movies are concerned, we will come to your location for a large collection, usually more than 1000 pieces or a carload.
Will you make a house call for me?
Is is 1,000 plus pieces? If so the answer is yes.  We sometimes will make exceptions for smaller promising collections if you are unable to travel.
What can I get for my brother/sister/significant other/co worker, old car, broken tv set, et al?
Depending on the state sometimes 10 to 40 years. We specialize in trafficking in the finest of music-related antiquities and present-day amusements, so if your trade offers don’t fall under that rubric, then sadly we can’t oblige.
I inherited a lot of really old records. Does that mean they are valuable?
Not necessarily. Age does not play much of a role in their value. Like most everything, the value of records is largely a supply/demand function. Very old records are not worth very much if no one wants them. By contrast, recently released records which were produced in limited numbers can be very valuable.
My dad gave me his Elvis Presley records. Can I retire now?
Not likely, unless you were already wealthy enough to retire. Most Elvis records are not particularly valuable; the exceptions tend to be original releases (not repressings) from the 50’s. RCA pressed Elvis records here in Indianapolis for many years, so they are actually more common here than other places.
What’s the best way to clean old records?
We stock cleaning liquids, cleaning cloths and the old DiscWashers, which are still being made. Some people use terrycloth towels and distilled water with about 5% rubbing alcohol. You can let them dry in a dish drainer. Take care to not soak the paper labels. When wiping records, use a circular motion that follows the grooves of the records.
Are your prices negotiable?
Nope.  That's why we have discounts M-F.  So please don't ask.  Buts, if you buy more than $100 on any day, that's an automatic 10% off.  Buy $500 and get 15% off.  Buy $1000 and get 20% off.  You get the idea.
